Description
THE TRIPLE PEAKS OF EIGER, MÖNCH AND JUNGFRAU
Eiger
The name Eiger comes from the Middle High German Hej-Gêr, meaning “high peak”, and its etymology can still be found in the Swiss vernacular word “Hoger”.
Mönch
At the foot of the mountain are alpine meadows where “Münche”, i.e. geldings, were once put to pasture in the summer at a time when horse breeding was still commonplace in the Oberland. And so the mountain towering above the gelding pastures came to be known as the “Münchenberg” and later simply Münch or Mönch.
Jungfrau
While the Mönch trail did not lead us to the Interlaken monastery, it certainly does so when it comes to the name of this mountain. Just as they did in Wengen and Wengernalp, the Augustinians owned pastures on the north-western slopes of the Jungfrau. These grazing meadows were popularly known as the “Jungfrauenberge”. With time, this general term shifted from a name designating ordinary cattle-grazing meadows where nuns operated alpine dairies to the highest peak in the entire massif, where it has remained to this day.
